When it’s time to build a website, one of the first decisions is who builds it: a freelancer or an agency? I’m a freelancer, so I’ll be upfront about my perspective — but I’ll give you the honest trade-offs either way, because the right answer genuinely depends on your project.
What an agency gives you
- A whole team. Designers, developers, project managers, marketers — useful for very large or multi-discipline projects.
- Capacity. Agencies can run several big projects at once and absorb sudden scale.
- Process and continuity. If one person leaves, the agency carries on.
The trade-off: higher cost (you’re paying for that overhead), and you often deal with an account manager rather than the person actually building your site — which can slow things down and blur communication.
What a freelancer gives you
- You talk to the maker. The person you brief is the person building it. Nothing gets lost in translation.
- Better value. Without the overhead, more of your budget goes into the actual work.
- Flexibility and speed. Decisions happen fast because there’s no layered approval chain.
- Genuine investment. A good freelancer’s reputation rides on your project, so they care.
The trade-off: one person has limits on capacity, and you’ll want someone experienced enough to cover design, development, and the technical side competently.
How to choose
Go with an agency if your project is very large, spans many disciplines at once, or you specifically need a big team and formal process. Go with a freelancer if you want direct communication, better value, flexibility, and someone genuinely invested — which covers the majority of small and medium business websites.
The middle path
The sweet spot for many businesses is an experienced full-stack freelancer who handles design, development, and DevOps end to end — agency-level capability without the agency price tag or the game of telephone. If that sounds like what you need, let’s talk about your project.
